Any federal student loan that you have is either eligible or can become eligible for PSLF.  Any private student loans that you have cannot be eligible for PSLF.  If your loans with Sallie Mae are federal student loans, what they told you is incorrect.  I recommend that you try and login to the Department of Education system for tracking federal student loans.  Even if you have ineligible federal student loans, you can make them eligible by consolidating.  Go to nslds.ed.gov.
