I’m 66. My plan is to file for SS Retirement and continue working. Currently, a garnishment is in place that takes 25% of my work income. Will my SS Retirement also be garnished and for how much? Proactively, what can I do?
Gary, I am sorry you are facing this. Administrative wage garnishment is one thing, and that sounds like what’s happening with your earnings. More on that here: https://www.myeddebt.com/borrower/wageGarnishmentNavigate
As for social security, that would come under another government collection power and be considered a “federal benefits offset”. No more than 15% of your total benefit can be offset and the government cannot take any amounts you get below $9,000/year or $750/month.
