Hello. I am currently repaying my loans through Fedloan. When Fedloan originally reprocessed my ibr calculation, they entered my income wrong (20,000 more than I actually make) and my monthly payment was way higher than it should be. They recently recalculated it and I am not being billed for the month of July. I e-mailed Fedloan to see if I could be billed because my philosophy is the sooner I make the 120 payments, the quicker I am done paying loans. Their response was that they are not billing me, but I can still make a payment for July in my new IBR amount. The representative said that will still count as one of my 120 payments. I am so confused though. I feel like I have read every piece of literature on this with a fine tooth comb and can’t find an answer on this. If the payments have to be scheduled, wouldn’t this one not count since I was technically not billed for this month? If I do go ahead and not pay this month since I have no amount due for July, I am still eligible for PSLF since the payments do not have to be consecutive, correct? A quick response would be so greatly appreciated since the month is almost up and I would like to make a payment if it will in fact count.
I don’t think there is a definitive answer to your question. If there is, I’m not aware of it. In my opinion, you’d likely be able to make a payment that counts, because your loan is probably still in a “repayment status”. If it were me, I would communicate with the servicer in writing to memorialize the expectation that your payment will count. Let us know how it goes!
