Finding a CPA & Financial Advisor who’s knowledgeable IBR

Does anyone have some advice on how to find a CPA and Financial Advisor who understands IBR?

I have over $200K in student loans, am on IBR, am getting married soon, and am lost regarding how to plan for the future ie saving for retirement, saving for a home, paying off my student loans, taxes, etc.

I’ve spoken to one Financial Advisor, but felt that she didn’t understand the IBR and was treating my student loan like a home loan which isn’t the same if you’re on IBR.

Thanks,
Lisa

I’m a CPA but education debt is rarely, if ever, something that I’ve ever heard other CPAs talking about.  Most financial advisors I’ve heard talk about it appear to be most interested in talking about investment products to save for college.  I’d suggest that what you are looking for is not someone of a particular profession but someone who has the experience of having a large education debt balance and satisfactorily dealing with it.  That said, I and others here will be happy to help and we are all learning new things every day.

It seems the first thing to do is to make sure your required payments under IBR stay as low as possible, regardless of whether or not you actually pay off the $200k.

Go to loanconsolidation.ed.gov and look at the calculator.

It will probably be best to file separately to keep your required payment as low as possible.

You might want to try CerebralStrategies.

Hi Lisa,
You have shared a number of concerns that require someone helping you to think about your economic picture.
I am willing to speak if you like.
