Hi,

I am currently in law school but I have some undergrad loans which are FFEL loans. I understand that I have to consolidate the FFEL loans in order for them to be eligible for PSLF. I called loan consolidation today and they told me I should wait until I graduate because my law school loans are in “in school” status and they will have to become direct loans as well. This confused me because I was under the impression that my law school loans were direct loans- they are serviced by fedloan. Does this make any sense?

Thanks

If the loans are serviced by FedLoan they aren’t necessarily direct loans, at least it is my understanding that FedLoan doesn’t only service direct loans. You’ll want to double check what kind of loans they are before you try to consolidate them. It is true that your law school loans would need to become direct loans to be eligible under PSLF. You’ll also want to consider when you want to start making payments towards PSLF, if that’s the route you want to go. Your timing may help you determine if you want to consolidate now or not.

I’m sorry I can’t give you a more exact answer, but I hope that helps!
