Specific rules regarding tax filing status

I have a bit of a confusing question that I cannot find the answer to.

I was in school full time all of 2014.  I graduated at the end of 2014 and will begin repayment in 2015 (as well as continue paying the loans that were deferred).  I did not make any payments toward loans in 2014. Is it possible to file married- jointly for our 2014 tax return but then submit my pay stubs rather than the tax return for IBR qualification (I make significantly less than my husband).  I know in general that a spouse’s income is considered if filing jointly; however, we will file our 2015 (and subsequent years) returns separately, as I will be making payments in 2015 and thereafter.  I believe that our tax status for last year’s (2014) taxes should not affect my future payments, only filing statuses during years that I actually pay the loan should affect what my payment is.

Is it possible to do this?

Thank you in advance.

Hi Jamie,

I’m under the impression that if you file jointly, you’ll have to report both of your incomes.  Even on the alternative documentation form you have to submit documentation for your spouse’s income.  My wife and I have been filing MFS for the past two years because we don’t want our incomes combined.  It stinks, but it is what it is…
