Dear Heather,

I just wanted your feedback on this specific topic. My loans are currently serviced by Mohela and it appears based on my research that I would qualify for PSLF if I remain with this servicer. Would you agree this is true? Should I consolidate with another servicer? Any insight is appreciated. Thank you.

Different companies may service federal loans that are eligible for PSLF, but only one company can grant forgiveness when the time comes, and currently that company is Fedloan servicing. If your loans already qualify and you’ve been making qualifying payments on your loans, do not consolidate them as it will wipe your history of payments on your loans. Your direct will automatically transfer to Fedloan servicing when you send in an employment certification form, or when you apply for forgiveness after 10 years. the only time consolidation is worth it is if your loans are not direct loans (which means they weren’t qualifying anyway) I’d strongly recommend sending in an employment certification form yearly to make sure that your payments are counting. The transfer to fedloan servicing takes about a month. You do not want to wait until the last minute and send 10 years of paperwork for them to process. Even the initial employment certification form took 4-6 months for them to process. I can’t imagine how long it would take to compile 10 years of payments, and I’d be extremely doubtful that they’d do it correctly, which means many many more months of waiting after your date of forgiveness.
