I understand that the president proposed including all household income in determining monthly student loan payments when he proposed capping PSLF forgiveness. I thought the married filing separately proposal was intended to be prospective and not retroactive? Can you confirm this for me? Also, do you think this change if it is ever adopted in the future would apply to all those in repayment or just new borrowers. I’m in repayment under the 20 year PAYE program and am thus considered a current borrower. I don’t want my significant other to be responsible for my debts which I took out long before we met. I could really use your insight, Heather. Thanks
The new plan ‘REPAYE’ changes nothing for people under ‘PAYE’.
It will be very hard for new rules/laws to change the payment plans that exist for current borrowers. They talk about your payment plans in the promissory note, so I don’t think its something anyone (even congress) can legally change.
