Transferring Schools, But Taking a Year Off

I’m currently a meteorology major at a University in Alabama. My plan was to reclassify as an in-state student to reduce the tuition costs. Unfortunately I found out that as a full time student I’m ineligible to do that.

The silver lining is the idea that I had, but I’m not sure how it will work out regarding my loans.  My plan is to transfer to Oklahoma, take a year off living there to establish residency, and then start school again as an in-state student.

Currently, I have over $10,000 in federal student loan debt. If I take a year off, even if my plan is to go back to school nearly immediately, is there anything I can do to avoid having to start re-paying my loans while I’m living in Oklahoma establishing my residency?

I had considered taking classes out of pocket for a semester but according to OU’s guidelines for reclassification, I can’t have taken any classes in Oklahoma for a year prior to the semester I reclassify.

I feel like there has to be a better way to do this, am I missing anything?

Thanks for all your help!!
Isaac

I see the owner of this site does not really help with the answers. The question is dated back from 2015-06-07 and no answer yet about it. I am also interested in this topic and I would really appreciate the help from anybody who is experienced in it or at least know the close answer.
