Hi, Heather! Thanks for getting back to me and I’m posting on your forum per your request. Okay, to answer your questions:
So I need to know more about what kind of loans you have? I have Stafford loans.
I assume your organization operates under Northern Ireland governance and is not an arm of a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization? Exactly.
Nothing about Public Service Loan Forgiveness or Income-Based Repayment says you have to have your desk in the United States.
Let me ask you this, do you file a US income tax return? I have historically (earning $00) but I did not for this year. However I could file a ‘late’ tax return, if helpful?
Many thanks Heather and hope this is of help to others working out of country!
Best wishes,
Mick
Sounds to me like you should be filing tax returns and applying for IBR. You’re probably not going to qualify for PSLF because of your employer, but you could earn 25-year IBR forgiveness by making “payments” of $0 every month for 25 years. Be aware, however, that 25-year IBR forgiveness is taxable under current law so you could get a helluva tax bill. But there are limits to how long you can defer. IBR! And if it were me, I’d consolidate into Federal Direct if I wasn’t already there just on the off chance you can convince someone that your work qualifies under PSLF.
