In 2003, thinking that we were doing the right thing, we jointly consolidated our federal loans with Sallie Mae and then we got on IBR. Since then, I have started working in a public service job and would like to take advantage of the PSLF program. Sallie Mae tells us I can’t do this for my half of the loans. So we tried moving our loans back to Direct Loans, and were told that we can’t move them either. The loans all originated as federal loans, and we are told by Sallie Mae that they are no longer federal loans, but instead, are now private loans. We could use some advice on what to do.
