Only Federal Direct student loans. That includes Federal Direct Stafford, Federal Direct GradPLUS, and Federal Direct Consolidation Loans.
Other federal loans, FFEL (federal family education loans), MUST be consolidated or reconsolidated into Federal Direct to be eligible for Public Service Loan Forgiveness.
You get FFEL loans into Federal Direct by consolidating: http://www.loanconsolidation.ed.gov/
Some of my Stafford loans are “Direct” loans and some are just “Stafford” loans. These “Stafford” loans were issued by a private bank. Can these loans be consolidated into Federal Direct loans? Can this be done through the loan consolidation website? Thanks in advance for your response.
Only Federal Direct Loans are eligible for Public Service Loan Forgiveness. FFEL (federal family education loans) can be consolidated into Federal Direct, yes. You’ll find all the consolidation information on the Federal Direct Consolidation site. And here’s a paper I did about which loans are The Right Kind of Loans for Public Service Loan Forgiveness.
I am currently making my payments to ACS. Do you know if my payments to this company would qualify me for any repayment help?
Great question! She does NOT need to consolidate all her loans together. IBR will take all her federal loans into consideration in determining IBR eligibility and payment. If borrowers have multiple lenders, total IBR payment can be apportioned among the lenders. But of course, only federal direct loans are eligible for PSLF.
