Question about AES loans

Hello Heather,

I have been trying to find information about my loans, and how to make them into reasonable monthly payments, with no luck.

I have loans thru AES, as well as a Direct Loan, and SUNY (State University of New York). The AES loans are the ones that are giving me the most trouble. The AES loan type says ALPN. I think they are private loans, because I tried to call them to do an IBR and they told me I was not eligible because of my loan type (Although according to my income I am eligible).

The amount that they want me to repay each month is more than I can afford, but they say I am not eligible for anything, besides forbearance, which I am almost out of for the remainder of my loans. So my worry is that if I cannot pay what they want per month, even though I pay them what I can, I will be further behind every month and become delinquent in my debt to them. I have called them and told them I cannot afford the payments, and they basically said that I really don’t have any other options.

I know that the president is changing the way repaying federal student loans work in 2012, but will any of this affect my student loans and make it easier on me to make payments? Is there anyway that I could make it so that my AES loans are affected by this new repayment for federal student loans?

Is there anything I can do about my AES loans to convert them into a federal loan to gain the benefits of the new repayment option? Or am I out of luck?

Thank you for your time,
Melissa

Hey, Melissa.  I recommend you read up on consolidation here: http://askheatherjarvis.com/blog/the-scoop-on-student-loan-consolidation and for more about the anticipated improvements from the president see this: this:http://askheatherjarvis.com/blog/will-the-presidents-student-loan-initiatives-help-you.  The best source of information about your federal loans is the National Student Loan Data System.  Find out about that here:  http://askheatherjarvis.com/blog/where-are-my-student-loans and
