Hi Heather - my loans were recently transferred to Federal Direct to be consolidated into a federal direct loan. When I called to ask that they be transferred to Fed Loan Servicing, Federal Direct informed me that my loans did NOT need to be at Fed Loan to participate in the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program. Do you know if this is true? Do my loans need to be serviced through Fed Loan to qualify for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program?
Megan, it’s confusing because there are a lot of different “servicers” that handle the billing and receive payments for federal “direct loans”. Only Federal Direct loans are eligible for PSLF, but it doesn’t matter which servicer is assigned to those Direct Loans. The key is to check that all your federal loans are Federal Direct rather than FFEL (Federal Family Education Loans).
