Is the forgiven amount from PSLF for an IBR plan taxable?

Hi Heather,
I am on an IBR plan and qualify for PSLF as a teacher at a university and am still unclear on whether the amount forgiven will be considered taxable income. I have read from various sources (one here: http://www.ibrinfo.org/faq.vp.html) that debt forgiven under PSLF is NOT considered taxable, but that debt forgiven under IBR IS taxable.

I may be overthinking this, but I am assuming these sources suggest the amount forgiven through IBR occurs after 25 years; therefore, for my situation, my amount forgiven via PSLF after 10 years would be a different scheme and therefore would NOT be considered taxable income. Just hoped for some more expert opinion.

Thanks very much.

Yep.  You got it.  PSLF is not taxable as income because it fits into a narrow exception in the tax code that applies to forgiveness programs with a specific service requirement.  Check out this source for a warm and fuzzy feeling about it: http://askheatherjarvis.com/uploads/images/108(f) IRS Information Letter.pdf

Thanks for being a teacher!  Maybe your university wants to hire me to come make a killer speech about student loans for your students?
