Hi Heather,
I saw you lecture at NYLS during 1L and now that I’m a 3L, feel the need to ask a question I probably should have asked then! With graduation rapidly approaching, I’d like to get all of my loans in order and I’d like to find a financial advisor to help me do so. Do you have any suggestions on how to find a reputable, trustworthy advisor? I hesitate to use google, I’ve asked around at various offices at school (I now attend Rutgers) but nobody has been very helpful. Can you advise?
Thank you!
Take a look at NAPFA.org to find a “fee-only” objective fiduciary. The professional organization is regularly mentioned in the WSJ and other reputable periodicals. ***Full disclaimer: I am a NAPFA registered advisor***
Agreed. NAPFA members align their interests with the interests of their clients and agree not to be paid based their client’s purchase of any financial product. Do ask questions about whether a given advisor is knowledgeable about student loans in particular because it is a sticky wicket. I am currently working to provide professional education for financial planners interested in helping student loan borrowers.
