My wife has just over 13K in student loan debt and is enrolled in IBR for 15 year despite having never made a payment due to being disabled since graduating. Her SSD income is too low to require payments.
I have no student loan debt. Now that we are married they look at joint income….mine being $80K annually and hers being around 10K annually of disability payments.
Basically they want to calculate joint income which means there will be a large payment due despite her having virtually no income.
I refuse to pay her 15 year old student loan debts. She can’t afford to pay. She is preparing to default instead.
Are there any other options at this point?
Married filing separately is not really an option.
Probably just filing taxes separately. You would rather default than file separately? I would doubt that that would be better in general. Won’t she ever need or want good credit?
