I was wondering if you could speak generally to the advantages of waiving in-school deferment (when returning to school and not taking any new loans) in order to keep earning months towards public service loan forgiveness vs. accepting the in-school deferment.
As best as I can figure, it depends on how much money you plan to earn after graduating from school:
If you plan to stay in public service employment and make enough money that you would have standard payments, you would want to decline ISD in order to take advantage of low income-based repayments towards PSLF.
But, if you anticipate still having a low income or you’re unsure about public service employment, you would want to take ISD and have the government pay your interest until you’re done, so that less interest would accrue and, ultimately, you’d pay less.
Are there any considerations that I’m missing? Any advice one way or another?
Thanks for your assistance Heather and everyone.
