Good morning,

I asked this question a year ago and no one really knew the answer, so I’ll ask again.

My wife and I file “married filing separately” to keep our IBR payments lower.  Obviously we are missing out on the tax benefits of filing jointly.

My question is, can I amend my return from the previous year (2012) to “married filing jointly”?  We would love ot get some of the money back we lost because we weren’t able to file jointly.  We have both submitted our 2013 returns as MFS, so I’m assuming future IBR payments will be based off those numbers.

I know technically speaking we are allowed to change from MFS to MFJ (and not vice versa), but I am unsure of any repercussions from the student loan side of things.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
