What a situation! My fiancé is a college professor with over a $100K debt who has provided hundreds or hours of volunteer work at her local VA hospital (all logged and verifiable) over more than a decade. She makes a good income and has been paying on her loathsome debt for ten years. Is there any way to apply those hundreds or hours of volunteer time towards debt forgiveness? THANKS!
Probably not, but she should look into the details of Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF). PSLF is earned by making 120 qualifying payments on eligible loans over at least 10 years. Many colleges are organized as 501(c)(3) nonprofits and can qualify as public service employers for PSLF. Be sure to understand the details - see the fact sheets on my tools page to begin with.
