Hi,
I’m a US citizen with a couple of federal loans in income-based repayment. I have long been working towards immigrating to another country (I haven’t lived in the US much since I was 18), and now it looks like citizenship may be only a couple of years away. I’m wondering if US citizenship is required to remain enrolled in the income based repayment program that my federal loans currently are in. I am considering giving up US citizenship at some point in the future but wouldn’t do it, if it meant that the benefits of IBR went away—I’m not sure I could handle my loans any other way.
I have asked my loan servicer about this but haven’t heard back. I have also scoured government IBR documents, and haven’t had any luck. I’m guessing my situation is a bit unique, but—wondering if you can help.
Thanks!
