Hi Heather,
For the past year, I have been looking for a public interest job and was making very little money. I am enrolled in IBR, and because I was making so little money the year before my payments were 0. I accepted an offer for a public interest fellowship (I start next week) that qualifies for PSLF and I would like to make sure that if I make payments that they are credited to my 10 years. I am wondering whether it would be beneficial to request, and who I would send the request to, that my IBR be based on my anticipated salary, and not what I made in the past year, so that there will be actual payments that can go towards PSLF.
Thank you for your help!
Even though you’re not paying anything right now, it’s actually counting as “payments” of $0. You don’t need to do anything to increase your payment as these $0 “payments” count toward PSLF.
