I have worked in the field of secondary education (junior - senior high school) with this being my 7th year. I paid my way through by taking out as few of student loans as possible. My first two years were spent in a private Christian school as a k-12 PE and Health Teacher and was also the Athletic Director. My third and fourth years were spent in a public city school where I served as the Middle School and High School Athletic Director. For the past three years I have served as an Assistant Principal and Athletic Director of a Junior / Senior High School.
I have been told two different answers by my loan servicing provider (Nelnet) in regards to if my experience meets the requirements of the Teacher Loan Forgiveness program. One told me that my assistant principal / athletic director duties would qualify me and the other informed me they would not. My last two jobs have been at low income schools.
Would my work experiences qualify me for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program? If so, how do I identify how many qualifying payments I have made to this point? Trying to determine my best route as I am ready to be done with these student loans. $312 / month and an interest rate nearly doubling my mortgage interest rate.
I believe (my informal understanding) is that ultimate determination of qualifying employment is by the Feds (Dept of Education), and through FedLoan Servicing (the Fed’s current chosen loan servicer for PSLF). You can look at this definition of qualifying employment: https://studentaid.ed.gov/repay-loans/forgiveness-cancellation/charts/public-service#what-kinds-of-employment - and also at the PSLF employment verification form (I think they are actually working on a new form).
My understanding is that once you fill out the PSLF “application” materials (which you don’t have to, but can, do anytime before officially applying at the end of 10 years of PSLF qualifying payments), your loans will be transferred to FedLoan and they will then tell you how many of your previous monthly payments qualify. You may want to try and contact the Feds (Dept of Education) or maybe FedLoan and try to get more information on your situation.
