Hi! I started working at a community college in January of 2011 on a part-time basis. I worked 28 hours a week. The following fall I also began teaching at the community college on a part-time basis. I taught a two credit course during the fall, spring, and summer. I did the math and added up all the hours I worked in the library with the hours I worked teaching (using the college’s formula that converts credits hours to hours worked) and discovered I averaged over 30 hours per week for a 12 month period. I continued teaching into the fall of 2012, which was right about the time the college began preparing for ACA implementation. At that point they told me I could no longer teach. A couple months later I was laid off from the library job, but then resumed teaching the following semester.
Here it is 2015 and I am still teaching part-time at the college, but I am now working part-time at a different library.
My question is, if I submit the employment certification form to the college, will I get credit towards forgiveness for the 12 months that I averaged 30+ hours a week? The PSLF employment certification form has a begin date and end date for employment and average number of hours worked fields. Will they base the average on the entire time I have been employed there? If they do that it will not average out to 30 hours a week.
Maybe you could have them fill out 2 employment certification forms? (or just one for the period that you worked more than 30+ a week?) I know when I worked as an adjunct with multiple places at the same time, I had them fill out my PSLF form when my avg was more than 30 hours a week. The work died down after that, and I was teaching a lot less…If I had waited to get the schools till fill out my forms, they might have averaged in the weeks that I subsequently did not work as much… which would come out to less than 30 hours….I guess it’s all up to how your HR office is willing to fill out the form. I’d ask them if they can fill out a form from the time period that you worked more than 30 hours, or at least fill out one for your teaching duties, and one for your library duties, and send them both in…although coming from the same employer might confuse them…..
