Hello Heather!
Firstly, thank you so much for this incredible resource!
I’m hoping you might have some insight for me on a PSLF question I have. I recently concluded a judicial clerkship and have since moved across the country due to my partner’s career in the military. I’ve been unemployed for 3 months now, and I’m considering taking an AmeriCorps position with a great non-profit organization. However, the position is a “half-time” AmeriCorps commitment, averaging out to 25 hours/week over a 9-month period. According to the Corporation for National & Community Service website (http://www.nationalservice.gov/resources/ed-award/loan-forgiveness), an AmeriCorps service position is only eligible for PSLF if it’s a “full-time” position (but as a half-time member I would still receive an education award at the end of my term).
Does that mean that my monthly payments would not qualify toward PSLF even if I had another part-time position with a non-profit? Do you think it would be it be possible for the organization I’m working for - if it’s willing, of course - to hire me for 5-10 hours a week for a nominal wage just to help get my hours above the PSLF 30-hour requirement? Or, would that lead to some sticky wage issues? It would be so frustrating if the service wouldn’t qualify because it’s 5 hours/week short!
Thank you so much for your time!
