I took out two Stafford non-subsidized loans in the 1980s. I’ve lived abroad all these years - and without entering into the (sordid) details of my family who I thought all these years - who had the money - would pay for my education never did and I now see never will.
So as you can imagine 30 years of interest have built up =
Total STAFFORD NON-SUBSIDIZED Outstanding Principal:$16,097
Total STAFFORD NON-SUBSIDIZED Outstanding Interest:$31,963
Total SUPPLEMENTAL LOAN (SLS) Outstanding Principal:$6,188
Total SUPPLEMENTAL LOAN (SLS) Outstanding Interest:$14,192
Loan Type:NATIONAL DIRECT STUDENT LOAN
In other terms :
Student Enrollment Status Effective Date:06/19/1987
Student Total All Loans Outstanding Principal:$22,285
Student Total All Loans Outstanding Interest:$46,155
I’m now considering to take this on myself as I see after 30 years of fighting with my family this will not resolve anything (although my mother is the garant on these loans).
Is there any way I could reduce the amount of interest? Or should I just “bite the bullet” and little by little pay back the whole thing?
As I’m now dual citizen of a foreign land and have been for twenty years, law abiding and tax paying I have never had any income in the US since at least 1986 so no taxes, no IRS or anything.
I’m considering a job back in the States and therefore I would need to take care of this outstanding debt as there are no statut of limitations.
Also to be honest I’m sick of the whole subject with my family and want to finish with this.
Thanks in advance for your answer.
