Defer loans while waiting for disability?

I have been home sick since Jan 2014 with autonomic neuropathy. At this point there is no treatment that has helped any symptoms and the disease is progressing..  We are unable to control heart rates, blood pressures, and now my vision is affected, aside from numerous other symptoms.

I spoke to a credit counseling service who recommended I come to you for some advice. I have still been making my student loan monthly payments. My husband has been our only income for the last two years.

The credit counselor recommended putting the loans into deferment while we are waiting on disability to hopefully come through.  If/when the disability is approved then I should be able to get the remainder of the loans disbursed, correct?

Am I missing anything? Hints, advice?  We’ve been so caught up in the medical side of things that we never even thought about how to save money by deferring the loans. It has been a long journey. As a nurse, this is super hard going to the patient role. I also never enrolled in the NELRP program for rural nursing, which I had been doing for the previous 8 years…not sure if that is something that could come into play after the fact or not.

Thanks for taking the time to help out and give some advice.
