Thanks for your site - very helpful. I have a couple questions and I think I understand the answers but wanted to verify.
I work for a state university and have made about 60 PSLF eligible payments at this point. I have been filing married separate, since my spouse’s employment doesn’t qualify for PSLF and we both have significant loan debt. It appears neither of our loan situations qualify for PAYE so we’ve both been doing traditional IBR. Now with REPAYE there appears to be an advantage to switching which would mean filing married joint this year, then switching to REPAYE. Which would mean a combined payment of our loans, but it looks like at a lower total amount then we are both paying separately.
As I understand it:
1) If we combine and switch to REPAYE - payments towards my eligible loans continue to count for PSLF and when I hit 120 payments my loans drop off
2) Then the remainder of my spouses loans will then stay and continue under the REPAYE terms.
Are those to assumptions correct?
Thank you.
