Greetings.  I am hoping I may be able to get some help from you.  My college loan journey started 25 years ago with about $30k in loans.  Over 25 years it is down to $5500 through a process of payments, deferments and forbearance as life’s demands (family and jobs) allowed and dictated how money was spent.  I lost my job 4 years ago due to the poor economy, and while searching for a job for 11 months unsuccessfully, I decided to return to school to finish a degree, which was accomplished, but came with a price tag of more debt.  I am very happy I finished, but have yet been unable to find a job using that degree (big surprise, I know).  Now I am sitting with $55k in debt once again trying to make ends meet as the family and income allow.  I am on an Income based repayment plan and am trying to pay on the original loan and the new ones at the same time.  I do not work in the public sector, but I have volunteered with fire departments for over 20 years, and up until my job loss 4 years ago worked for non-profits for over 15 years.  I am married to a teacher who has no student loan debt (her parents paid for hers).  I am told now that I do not qualify for any types of lower payments and that deferment is not possible, and forbearance will add over $200 a month in interest, so I really hate to do that.  Based on my situation, do you know of any programs that I would qualify for in terms of loan forgiveness or restructuring to make paying them off more bearable?  We are in out 40s with an AGI of $71,000, raising four kids, living in a rental house.  We have all but given up on owning a house or enjoying anything new because of our commitment to pay whatever extra we have to the loans, which many times is not the monthly payment required, but at least it is something.  Other sites I have tried are dead ends, and the lenders say the same thing and appear to have no knowledge beyond the standard four forms they want you to fill out.  Thank you in advance for any help you can offer.
