Direct Loan unable to verify my debts-I’m drowning!

I have multiple student loans from the multiple times I have been enrolled in school.  The first time was in the 90s, and there is astonishingly little information about the terms of these loans.  I have full records from my other loans, but nothing, other than the balance, on these.  Over the past 20 years these loans have been in default various times, consolidated twice, and rehabilitated once.  I remember going through one consolidation and the rehab, but I don’t recall the other consolidation.

Since 2013 I have made regular payments, and the majority of months I have paid more than the minimum. Even so, my balance on the consolidated loan is 3 times more than what was borrowed.  I would like to know how.

I spent several months in 2015 trying to get information about the consolidated loans from FedLoan.  They refused to give me any records prior to 2011, because they said that was when THEY took ownership of my loans.  In February of this year, I contacted the Ombudsman.  I was stalled several times, sent copies of paperwork I had already received, and finally, as of last month was told they have no paperwork from the point of rehabilitation forward.  Apparently there is NO existing paperwork prior to 2011, and the ombudsman literally told me I had NO options.  No one is able to give me any proof of fees that were applied, terms that I agreed to, or anything pertaining to my oldest, most expensive set of loans, and I don’t see how this is legal.

The government is clearly profiting off my loans, and they are continuing to charge me over $11/day just on interest with the consolidation.  Shouldn’t I have the right to verify that their records are accurate?  I don’t know what to do or who can help.  All of the attorneys who ‘specialize’ in student debt are aimed at helping borrowers who have been sued.  I am in good standing, so it seems like no one is able to offer any help or advice.  Help, please!
