Spousal Signature

On the income based repayment plan, in order to qualify, they want my spouse to log in and input some information.  I’m afraid that by doing this I will become responsible for his student loan debt.  He incurred his student loans before our marriage and I would like to keep our student loans separate.

So my question is, by him signing on for the income based repayment will the responsibility for my loans be shared with him and vice versa?

Thank for your help,

I don’t think you have anything to worry about. The Department of Ed is now requiring spousal signatures on IBR annual recertification forms. The signature just affirms that your income statement is correct. You are not signing any kind of promissory note or anything. If you ever have doubts, take some time and read the fine print. (in fact, you should do it anyway)
