Hi Heather,

I am in the PSLF program. I have already begun making qualifying payments under the REPAYE program. Can I switch to the PAYE program and keep those past qualifying payments? Or will the payments be eliminated (start over to 120) once I begin a new program (REPAYE to PAYE)?

I am getting married within the next few years and do not want my spouse’s income to count toward my payments—as it does under REPAYE.

Thanks,
Andrew

I’ve never heard anyone claim that switching from one qualifying plan to another had the effect of resetting the number of qualifying payments made to zero.  In theory, you should even be able to switch from a qualifying plan to a non-qualifying one, then pick up where you left off upon switching back to a quakifying plan.  Though I don’t see why anyone would choose to do that.  For what it’s worth, I was on IBR for years and there were no hiccups when I switched to REPAYE.
