My question is about this teacher loan forgiveness requirement: “You must not have had an outstanding balance on Direct Loans or Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) Program loans as of Oct. 1, 1998, or on the date that you obtained a Direct Loan or FFEL Program loan after Oct. 1, 1998.”
Assuming all other requirements for forgiveness are met my understanding and situation is as follows and any corrections or reinforcement of my understanding would be appreciated. I have an undergraduate loan started in 2002(graduated in 2006), I have a later graduate loan started in 2010. The first undergraduate loan would be eligible for forgiveness, but the second loan would not as I still had a balance to be paid on the first loan. The requirement I quoted above prevents the second loan from being forgiven as their was an outstanding balance from my previous loan. I am a Math teacher and the forgiveness would wipe out my undergraduate loan and some of my graduate loan if it could be put towards both so I curious if my understanding of this is correct.
